Yet Another Pivot Tube Repair

This time it is yet another Meyer C-8. It came in for service along with the E-57 pump to be rebuilt. We found both Pivot Pins dry and rusted solid in the Sector Pivot Tube. After heating and pounding on one Pivot Pin, and knowing the Sector had to come off to replace the shattered Center Pivot Bushing, We decided it would be best to just cut the pins with the sawzall. Then use the plasma to cut off the Pivot Tubes, and weld new ones onto the Sector. More and more we have been replacing the Pivot Tubes on the Sector of both C and ST Model Meyer plows, because it is easier. We waste a lot of gas heating the Pivot Tubes, and in the end, they often need to be replaced anyway. When it comes to Pivot Pins rusted solid in the Moldboard, be it a Meyer C or ST Series plow, we try very hard to get the seized or broken Pivot Pin out.

After removing the King Bolt, we found the Bushing cracked on the Sector.

You can see we heated this one. You can also see the hollow in the center of the Pivot Pin has no sign of grease in it. This repair could have been avoided.

This next project is waiting in the wings. An ST-7.5 to be re-skinned.

I wish there was an easy answer when it comes to repairing these at home. Unless you have a torch, it is going to be a long process. IF you have a plasma cutter and a welder, it is not too bad of a job. IF you plan to have a weld shop make the repairs on your plow, do yourself a favor and bring the the correct parts. We have seen many repairs using the WRONG parts not hold up in the field.
